Engaged Learning
PLSC 398: Experiential learning on the Hill.
Every Friday, I spent a few hours with Loyola students and Program Director Susan Dimock learning about professional development and how to navigate D.C in PLSC 398. This class was a highlight because it gave us a space to talk about our internships and hear about our peers' experiences too. As a group, we talked through the successes and challenges of our internships and participated in exercises to refine our professional skills. On top of this, we also had the chance to hear from professionals all across the city. We visited many places including the Democratic National Headquarters, the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security.
As part of this class, I contributed to the program's student-run blog. Read my entry here.
Experiential learning beyond the Hill.
PLSC 398 was not my only engaged learning outlet. I had the chance to witness to a whirlwind of historical events while in D.C. Namely, impeachment, which began shortly after our arrival and played out just blocks away from where we lived. Impeachment impacted many of our internships and gave us very unique opportunities to hear from experts. We also felt the impact of the global climate protests that shook the district and the world throughout the months we were there.
