Highlights
Memorable experiences and learnings from my time at Brookings.
- Tracked clips: I became proficient in the public relations software Cision which I used to regularly track media clips (newspaper, radio and TV features) for Brookings scholars and initiatives.
- Media lists: Also using Cision, I developed media lists to target outreach efforts for initiatives, events and research. Topics ranged from impeachment and climate to technology.
- Promotional Material: I learned how to write a press release, develop a communications plan (for the release of The Democracy Playbook), and write pitches about research on topics including 5G, immigration, artificial intelligence and local journalism.
- Writing: In addition to promotional material, I wrote event coverage, summarized strategic communications needs, and drafted social media copy and blog posts.

- Policy 2020: My time at Brookings coincided with the development and launch of Policy 2020, an initiative focused on providing fact-based information on topics related to the 2020 election. Not only was following its development a fantastic learning experience, but I performed regular clip tracking to monitor the initiative's media attention and engagement.
- Brookings's Podcast Segment: In conjunction with Policy 2020, I assisted with developing a new podcast segment for The Brookings Cafeteria Podcast aimed at engaging young people. The segment, Ask an Expert, asks college students to send in questions about the 2020 election and that scholars answer on-air.

- Database development and management: I helped make media tracking more efficient by adding additional features to Cision and building out the department's Quickbase account.
- Events: I was fortunate enough to attend events on a wide range of topics including impeachment, the fall of the Berlin Wall and ISIS.
- Professional development: As part of the Brookings internship program, I attended many "Lunch and Learns" featuring Brookings professionals discussing their journeys, a graduate school event and a LinkedIn workship, among other things.
